About the Readings . . .

We hear the prologue to the story of the prophet Samuel. (first reading) Hannah, beloved of Elkanah, is childless as she prays at the shrine at Shiloh. It is to be a new beginning of God’s initiative to shape a people for himself.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus puts his mission in the context of cosmic revelation to come – as he explains to his disciples.

We understand the reading from Hebrews (second reading) best when we hear the Gospel. The writer declares that as Christ’s work is completed, his people may now enter the heavenly sanctuary in worship, and though earth-bound, participate in their eternal destiny. In this knowledge a disbursed and persecuted Church takes up its mission; a new day has dawned.

Next Week’s Readings (Last Pentecost):
2 Samuel 23:1-7; Psalm 132:1-19
Revelations 1:4b-8; John 18:33-37
