About the Readings . . .
As the Book of Job comes to its conclusion Job repents, after the Lord has shown him his presumption. But there is something more: Job comes to know God not as a blind force but as a presence, inviting relations. (first reading)
The author of the Epistle (second reading) interprets Jesus’ role in terms of the Temple priesthood, seen as mediating divine/human relations. Jesus bestows on them God’s favor eternally — “a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek” as we heard last Sunday. (second reading)
The Gospel offers illustration. Mark wants us to see Jesus’ invitation to discipleship in his gift of healing: the once-blind Bar-timaeus follows him in the “way” – an early term for the Christian community.
Next Week’s Readings (24 Pentecost):
Ruth 1:1-18; Psalm 146
Hebrews 9:11-14; Mark 12:28-34
