About the Readings . . .
Our (first) readings continue from the book of Job. He has persistently sought to know why he must suffer. While his friends attribute it to his sin, Job seeks God’s response. At last God replies; his answer is no answer.
The answer comes. The letter to the Hebrews explains that when Jesus sought rescue from suffering, God‘s reply was to make his suffering the means to greater fulfillment . . . and for us. (second reading)
The question the Gospel puts to us is whether we too would choose the way of the cross, Jesus’ path of suffering, with Jesus. James and John serve are our stand-ins.
Next Week’s Readings (23 Pentecost):
Job 42:1-6, 10.17; Psalm 34:1-8, 19-22
Hebrews 7:23-28; Mark 10: 46-52
